Brian Miller, guitar, Laura Mackenzie, flute, Andrea Stern, harp & Norah Rendell, flute and voice

St. Paul’s Irish music scene has been developing rapidly over the last decade. The four musicians performing on March 4 can attest to this trend firsthand. All are well versed in the tradition, Ireland’s aural folk music style, which consists of vocal music (songs) and dance music (tunes). Especially notable to this performance is the inclusion of harp tunes. The Irish harp tradition nearly went extinct 200 years ago, but the instrument has had a renaissance over the past 50 years.

Miller, Mackenzie, Stern, and Rendell have played together for years in various combinations as duos, but this performance will be their first as a semi-formal quartet. Listeners will be guided through a variety of tunes including "O’Carolan’s Draught", a composition of blind harpist Turloch O’Carolan, "The Maid of Mountain Brow", a lumberjack song sung by early Minnesotan immigrants, and "Ar Bhruach na Carraige Báine", one of the few Irish-language songs with a happy ending!
